Description

Brandeler, Agnes van den (born Delft 18-10-1918-gest. Hengelo, Gld. 15-3-2002), painter, graphic artist, illustrator, icon painter. Daughter of Willem Cornelis Quirin van den Brandeler (1885-1971), procuration holder at a trading company, and Hillegonda Baroness van Randwijck (1888-1970). Agnes van den Brandeler married Andries Louis van den Brandeler (1902-1991), hydraulic engineering on 2-8-1963 in Den Briel. This marriage remained childless. Jonkvrouw Agnes van den Brandeler was born in Delft, as the daughter of a noble couple - her father was Jonkheer, her mother Barones. With her younger brother Pim, she grew up on Surinamestraat in The Hague, where her mother received on her weekly "Jour" ladies in The Hague. Her father was a procuration holder at the Dutch English technical trading company. The summers spent the family on Kasteel Rossum, the family home of mother's side in Gelderland. After her final exams at the Christian gymnasium, the young Agnes was supposed to make her entrance to the world, but she was not interested in all that 'entertainment stuff' and her parents announced that she was ambulent as a artist (quoted. Montijn and Ottevanger , 11). This was especially difficult for her father to accept and he demanded that his daughter would learn a "real profession" in addition to her education at the Academy. While she was allowed to go to the Academy in the afternoon, she had to follow a typist in the morning at the Denneweg in The Hague. Despite their concerns about the future of Agnes, her parents always kept supporting her, also financially.
