Jan Cremer, Umbria III, 2001, Hand painted plate, 52 cm. Signature Cremer front and back
Jan Cremer (Enschede, 1940) studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem. Cremer soon became known for his 'peinture barbarisme'. In late summer 1958, Cremer ends up in Paris. He ends up in the Rue Santeuil where Bram Bogart, Corneille, Dora Tuinman, Lotti van der Gaag and Kees van Bohemen had studios at the time. Cremer worked as Bogart's assistant and was also taught by him. In 1964, Cremer left for New York where he began painting Dutch landscapes. This "Dutch Realism," with cows, farmers' wives and tulip fields, marks a break with the highly abstract, expressionist work of the years before.
