Charles Leickert (1816-1907) was a student of W.J.J. Nuijen and from 1839 by Andries Schelfhout. The latter in particular had a great influence on his work. He painted beautiful Dutch winter scenes, summer landscapes and river views, in which he incorporated all kinds of motifs from his sketchbooks. After 1859 he also painted beach scenes and cityscapes. The attractiveness of his paintings is determined, among other things, by the beautiful light and strong narrative details.
Leickert opted for the 'rustic' themes such as the unembellished, everyday landscapes in the vicinity of a Dutch town or village, or village view. Nevertheless, Leickert succeeded in evoking a very Romantic atmosphere in these landscapes and cityscapes, by often depicting a very subtle light in his works, in particular the light of the evening sun.
The painting on offer shows a typical work from the artist's oeuvre, a classic winter scene with numerous figures in the middle of the houses skating on the ice.
