Henry Schouten (1857-1927)
The Belgian painter Henry Schouten learned to paint animals and landscapes with cattle at the Brussels academy and mainly under his teacher Alfred Verwee. He would become famous for it. In addition to cows and horses, he gradually added dogs and poultry to his repertoire. In the fashion of his time, he depicted these animals in their natural environment, paying attention to the special characteristics of their breed. Schouten's paintings were very popular with the wealthy Belgian bourgeoisie in the second half of the 19th century.
