Description

Fisherman's wife on the beach, Jozef Israels, 17.5 x 15.5 cm, oil on panel. Late 19th century.

Beautiful work by Jozef Israels. In good condition.

Jozef Israels, the nestor of the Hague School, was a pupil of J.A. Kruseman and of the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. From 1845 to 1847, and later in 1853, he studied in Paris where he became acquainted with French realism. Influenced by this, he went to Zandvoort and Katwijk in the Netherlands and made the hard life of the fishing population the subject of his work. By extension, in the 1970s he discovered the "picturesque" life of the Gooi farmers. Even during his lifetime, Jozef Israëls had great success with his romantic-realist paintings both in the Netherlands and abroad.
