Frans Bakker (1871-1944)
The Rotterdam-born painter Frans Bakker lived and worked in Indonesia between 1920 and 1932 and built a reputation as a painter of impressionistic landscapes, harbors and village views on Java and Sumatra. His sharp observational skills characterize his work. When he returns from Indonesia he settles in The Hague. The city, close to the beach and the sea, inspires him to paintings and watercolors that are a cross between lively cityscapes, beach scenes and genre scenes.
