Jean-Hubert Tahan (1777-1843), Mary with Jesus and St. Jan, oil on canvas, 121 x 2 x 80 cm, Jean-Hubert Tahan was a painter of religious scenes and portraits. Tahan was a student of the great French painter Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). Tahan was born on November 8, 1777 in Spa, België. He was a student of landscape painter Nicolas-Henri-Joseph de Fassin (1728-1811). In 1795 Jean-Hubert Tahan was called up as a conscript for the Grande Armée and had to go to Paris. In Paris he came into contact with Jacques-Louis David, painter of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. David set him free of military service. Jean-Hubert Tahan probably participated in the next world famous frescoes of his teacher David: Initiation of Emperor Napoleon I and Core of Empress Josephine in the cathedral Notre-Dame in Paris, December 2, 1804 "( 621 x 979 cm). Tahan died as an acclaimed artist in Niort on May 23, 1843. Provenance: from a private collection.
