Johannes Jacobus (Jan J.) van der Stap was born on August 28, 1874 in Delft and died on February 5, 1940, also in Delft. He also lived and worked in Delft all his life. Van der Stap did take drawing lessons, but otherwise mainly trained himself. He painted, watercolored and drew (pastel) townscapes, villagescapes and landscapes in the vicinity of Delft in the style of the Hague School.
This painting depicts the beautiful castle 'ter Hoorn' in Rijswijk the Netherlands, which was demolished in 1953.
