The painter Lodewijk Franciscus Hendrik (Louis) Apol was born in The Hague in 1850. He is among the most important masters of the Hague School.
The subjects and artistic qualities of the still young Apol came about under the influence of his teachers, including J.F. Hoppenbrouwers and Pieter Stortenbeker. Louis Apol received a silver medal at an exhibition in Amsterdam in 1874 and the gold medal in Barcelona in 1898.
Apol was a member of "Arte et Amicitiae" during his lifetime. He died in his hometown of The Hague in 1936.
Louis Apol became best known for his beautiful, atmospheric winter landscapes and snowy forest views. People play a secondary role in them. Apol knew how to create a fairy-tale atmosphere like no other, in which nature in particular gets all the attention. He often painted the landscape around his birthplace The Hague, but works from the Arnhem area are also known. He also painted a number of summery river and moorland scenes.
Works by this painter can be found in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Haags Gemeentemuseum, among others.
