Zhuang Hong Yi's works exude beauty, sophistication and a high degree of perfection, with a clear Chinese influence, touching you through his use of colours, themes, shapes and different materials.

The fact that one can clearly recognise Chinese influences in his work, elegantly combined with a strong Western look, confirms the combination of Zhuang's background and education in China as well as his international, European experience and inspiration, which he has amassed since 1990, the year he moved to the Netherlands, eventually settling in The Hague.

His current 'Flowerbeds' are made of delicate pieces of dyed rice paper, folded and cut into hundreds of flower buds. The inspiration for these Flowerbeds were the endless, colourful bulb fields, which he saw gliding beneath him during his first flight from China to the Netherlands. This pure composition of colour fields impressed him so deeply that, even after 15 years, Zhuang is still inspired by it. Zhuang has developed a technique, merging his traditional Chinese training with his Western experiences. By combining rice paper (a material mainly associated with the ancient Eastern world) with an innovative version of European Impressionism, his work, especially its 3-dimensional nature, becomes a special and fascinating hybrid between painting and sculpture. In close-up, the colours begin to blend, creating a constant stream of precisely folded flowers.
