Description
Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819–1891) Title: Bateau de Peche au Clair de Lune, Hollande The work on offer shows an exquisite composition of a fishing boat in the moonlight, with a wonderful reflection in the water. Dimensions canvas; 60x43cm Dimensions with frame; 86x68cm Provenance: from a Dutch private collection The painting is listed in Jongkind's oeuvre catalogue; : Vol.1, Paintings Paris ’03 p.104, no.137 full color publication. Jongkind spent a large part of his life in France. He regularly traveled to the Netherlands where, especially in and around Rotterdam, he found inspiration for his city and harbor views and landscapes with ships. His landscapes by moonlight were unique. His loose, free brushstroke lends his paintings the immediacy of the work of the Impressionists. Yet he painted them all in the studio. French contemporaries admired his work and generally saw him as the pioneer of Impressionism. Manet called him the father of modern landscape painters. In Jongkind's earliest work, the influence of his first teacher Andreas Schelfhout is clearly present. The French writer and critic Emile Zola (1840-1902) wrote about Jongkind: 'I don't know of a more interesting personality. […] His craft as a painter is just as special as his way of looking […] You could say that they are rough sketches drawn hastily, for fear that the first impression will escape. You feel that the phenomenon takes place in the eye and hand of the artist. He sees a landscape at a glance, in the reality of the whole, and translates it in his own way. As he keeps the truth of it and transmits to it the emotion he felt. And that makes the landscape live on the canvas, no longer as it lives in nature, but as it has lived for a few hours in a rare and exquisite personality. […] Here everything is original, the craft, the impression and everything is true, because the landscape was captured in reality before it was lived by a man.' (Emile Zola, 'Mon Salon. Les Paysagistes' in: 'L'Événement illustré', June 1, 1868). Viewing is of course possible. We also have our own in-house frame maker, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary. We also use conservators from the trade association: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you would like to make use of these options feel free to contact us.
