Au sein de désert: Oases van Verbeelding in het engels
Explore the colorful world of CoBrA co-founder Corneille. From a boy with a love for Picasso to a renowned artist with a distinctive style.
Corneille, born as Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo in Liège, Belgium, was an influential Dutch painter and sculptor. Although largely self-taught, he attended art courses at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He ultimately held his first exhibition in Groningen.
Initially, Corneille's work was strongly influenced by Picasso. However, in 1948, he decided to break away from this inspiration and develop his own style. That same year, he joined the CoBrA movement, which he co-founded with other artists and became widely recognized for.
Together with his wife, Henny Riemens, he traveled extensively around the world. These journeys greatly influenced the nature of his work. From 1960 onwards, Corneille returned to figurative art, often depicting women, birds, and flowers in his works.
