Petrus Schotel was the son of the well-known Dordrecht marine painter J.C. Schotel. He continued his father's tradition in seascapes, river scenes and harbour views in a realistic-romantic style. He had a great knowledge of ship types and rigging and taught drawing at the Royal Naval Institute in Medemblik from 1830 to 1848. During his lifetime, he made many study trips to France, Belgium and Germany, where his work was highly appreciated. Teacher of G. van Emmerik and C.P. Schotel. Museums: including Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam and Museum Boymans-Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
