Johannes Hilverdink was born in Groningen in 1813. The family soon moved to Amsterdam, where Johannes was taught by J.A. Daiwaille and subsequently enrolled in the Academy of Drawing. As a painter, he then specialised in romantic landscapes and seascapes. From 1846, he was a member of Arti et Amicitiae and participated in the exhibitions of Living Masters until an advanced age. Hilverdink made trips to Belgium, Germany, England, France and Greenland.
