Description

Ralf Jacobs, Proun 219, cyanotypes on paper, 65 x 50 x 1 cm, perhaps Ralf Jacobs can best be described as a photographer. He 'writes with light' in a beautiful spectrum of old and new techniques, from 19th-century cyanotypes to software-laid laser projections. By combining various photographic procedures and images, he creates new realities in which time is included as a tangible presence. A laser can trace the harmonographic image on chemically treated paper to create a cyanotype, a photographic printing process that is also known as a blueprint and that was discovered in 1842 by Sir John Herschel. Jacobs also uses this vintage process to transfer conventional photos to the characteristic cyan hue, which makes the image saturated from a melancholic passing of time. The work is not framed, but framing is possible, see the last image.
