The painting offered shows a beautiful village view in a busy street. Charles Leickert (1816-1907) was a student of W.J.J. for a short time Nuijen and from 1839 from Andries Schelfhout. The latter in particular had a lot of influence on his work. He painted beautiful Dutch ice creams, summer landscapes and river views, in which he processed all kinds of motifs from his sketchbooks. After 1859 he also painted beach scenes and cityscapes. The attractiveness of his paintings is determined by, among other things, the beautiful light and strongly narrative details. Leickert chose the "rustic" themes such as the not extra embellished, daily landscapes in the vicinity of a Dutch city or village, or village view. Nevertheless, Leickert succeeded in evoking a very romantic atmosphere in these landscapes and cityscapes, by often reflecting a very subtle light in his works, in particular the light of the evening sun. The painting comes from a private collection.
