The painter Willem Johann Martens (1839-1895) received his first painting lessons from the history painter Nicolaas Pieneman. In addition to landscapes and church interiors, his work also includes genre pieces and portraits. Martens made a study trip to Berlin and lived for a long time in Rome where he was a member of the artists' association Gli Acquerellisti. He qualified in the so -called "Italienne" genre, arising from the big question at that time to figure pieces of Italian cleaning, often in traditional costume. The artwork offered shows a nice representation of his hand, painted with great craftsmanship.
