Abstract by Jan Stekelenburg

Jan Stekelenburg was born in 1922 in Maasbree and began his education at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam in 1947. During his studies, he was part of a group of painters who engaged in a struggle against traditional visual art through abstraction and experimentation. As a result, he belonged to the first group of abstract painters in the Netherlands after the war. Jan exhibited at the famous Marcel Bernheim gallery in Paris in 1955. What makes his work unique is that it is not entirely abstract. In addition to the visible aspects, there are also emotional values visible in the works. His work is often described as atmospheric, where shapes and color harmonize together.
