The self-taught Carl Eduard Ahrendts painted finely detailed romantic summer and winter landscapes, beach and townscapes. He worked and lived all his life in The Hague but also painted in Gelderland and traveled to Kleve, as evidenced by a single panoramic painting of this city. Although it is not entirely clear whether Ahrendts belonged to B.C. Koekkoek's circle of pupils, his work seems to have been influenced by Koekkoek in terms of subject matter and composition.
