Shells Fisherman, Philip Sadée, oil on canvas, 50 x 30 cm. signed
Extraordinary and large work by Philip Sadée. Beautifully framed and in perfect condition. Private collection, purchased from renowned auction house Sotheby's
Philip Sadée, born in The Hague in 1837, began drawing lessons at the age of ten. His teacher was Paul Tétar van Elven, a former pupil of Jacobus van den Berg. The latter apprenticed Sadée from the age of fourteen to be trained as a history painter. Sadée also took classes at the Haagsche Teekenacademie. Once at work in his own studio, he began making history paintings and made a series of study trips with Willem Karel Nakken, Jacob Maris and Matthijs Maris, among others.
Philip Sadée is a versatile painter. He not only painted strikingly beach, sea and dune scenes, but also chose other subjects in which he knew how to depict the atmosphere and mood aptly.
