Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller (1855-1925)
The talented Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller took a year of painting classes at Amsterdam's Rijksacademie under Nicolaas van der Waay and then continued his education (in 1877) at the academy in The Hague. There, the artistic climate was dominated by the Hague School, with painters such as Willem Roelofs, the Maris brothers, Mesdag and Gabriel. After a few more years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, the painter returned to the Netherlands, where the water and lake area around Amsterdam and The Hague became his favourite working territory. Wijsmuller's oeuvre is sometimes considered to be a descendant of the Hague School.
