In an atmospheric tableau, drawn with delicate and fine lines, we are greeted by a woman with a piercing gaze. The depth in her eyes immediately captures our attention, while shadows on her face highlight her sharp cheekbones and nose. Her hair, elegantly put up, is adorned with a wreath of leaves or flowers, giving her an ethereal look.
Although we only catch glimpses of her clothing, she holds in her hand a bunch of grapes or something similar, suggesting that she is not just an ordinary woman. The dark, textural background frames her portrait, making her stand out even more and giving the scene a moody atmosphere.
Below the portrait, the word "Bacchantin" reveals a hint to her identity: possibly she is a follower of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. This suspicion is reinforced by the bunch of grapes she is holding, a symbol of celebration and abundance. To her right, subtly etched in the corner, we find the signature of the artist, Wilhelm Christens, who gave us this beautiful, enigmatic sculpture.
