Marie Henri Mackenzie held a senior position at an oil company before devoting himself entirely to painting at the age of 45. He took lessons from G.H. Breitner in Amsterdam and developed into a spontaneous and lively impressionist, recording urban life in his paintings without concern for detail. His favourite subjects were Amsterdam city life and piling, demolition and excavation. In doing so, he showed himself to be a true disciple of Breitner. His palette was sometimes dark, at other times he used strongly contrasting colour masses in which yellow and warm red dominate.
