Description

Wiertz, Henri Louis (Joub) Wiertz; born in Amsterdam on August 7, 1893, and passed away in Hardenberg on December 9, 1966. He lived and worked in Amsterdam, Laren (North Holland), Groningen, Assen, Hilversum; and since 1949 in Ommen. He traveled extensively: Africa, South America, China, Russia, and Australia. He received advice from the Belgian painter V.E. van Uytvanck, a student of Prof. Willemse in Dendermonde. Originally trained as an engineer, he became an architect and painter. He painted, watercolored, and drew (with pen) in an expressionistic style, focusing primarily on landscapes. He is known for his color-accurate cement technique. His graphic works include lithographs and woodcuts, with a special focus on heraldic studies with T. van der Laars. He also worked on certificates, etc. He taught, among others, J.F. van den Berg and S. Mantel. He was a member of "De Onafhankelijken" in Amsterdam for many years.
