Frederik Roosdorp (1839-1865) was a talented Dutch painter known for his romantic-realistic style. He specialized in painting vibrant, romantic cityscapes, a genre that was popular between 1830 and 1850, with Cornelis Springer (1817-1891) being regarded as one of the great masters of this style. Like Springer, Roosdorp painted both city fantasies and real cities. Roosdorp's career was cut short when he passed away at the age of just 26. Although he had little time to fully develop his potential, his paintings remain a valuable contribution to 19th-century Dutch art.
This oil painting on panel is signed in the lower left. The work depicts a street scene in a city, with a few figures visible and a horse-drawn carriage passing by. It’s a beautifully light depiction, likely aiming to capture a summer’s day.
