Provenance:
-From a private collection

Corneille (1922-2010) was a painter and graphic artist who radicalized the conservative Dutch art world in the early 1950s. Together with five other influential artists, including Karel Appel and Constant, he founded the post-war European expressionist movement CoBrA in 1948. Corneille took drawing and etching courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam between 1940 and 1942, but is generally considered a self-taught painter. Initially strongly influenced by the work of Picasso, Corneille made abstract work. From the late 1960s, Corneille's work became more figurative in nature. In this work, birds, women and flowers are often the subject.
