Albertus Verhoesen, who specialized in painting landscapes with dogs, small livestock, and animal sheds, became most famous for his poultry scenes. He was a student of Jan van Ravenswaay and the animal painter P.G. van Os. He lived and worked in Utrecht and Amersfoort and was part of the artists' colony in Hilversum from 1824 to 1826. During his 'Hilversum years,' Verhoesen likely received lessons from B.C. Koekkoek, who was also living there at the time. In Amersfoort, Verhoesen worked as the city draftsman for nearly twenty years. In addition, he was also an art dealer.
