Description

Jan Toorop (1858-1928) was an influential Dutch painter and draftsman, known for his versatile style. He was born in the Dutch East Indies and moved to the Netherlands at a young age. Toorop began his art education at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In the 1890s, he developed a symbolic style strongly influenced by Art Nouveau.

His works often contained mystical and spiritual themes, using detailed lines and decorative elements. In addition to paintings, Toorop also created graphic work, such as posters and lithographs, which were popular in his time. In his later years, his work became more religious in nature, particularly after his conversion to Catholicism. Today, Toorop is considered one of the greatest Dutch artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.
