Albert Jurardus van Prooijen has become known with Dutch landscapes with cattle, a popular genre in the 19th century. In addition to landscapes, the artist initially also painted Marines and cityscapes: between 1860 and 1868 mostly of his hometown Groningen, then in Deventer, Zutphen, Vorden and Vaassen. His love, however, mainly went out to meadows with cows. With regard to detailed painting style, his youth work is in line with romance, after 1870 he painted with a rougher touch.
