Shibata Zeshin (1807–1891) was a versatile and influential Japanese artist from the late Edo and early Meiji periods, celebrated for his masterful lacquerwork, painting, and calligraphy. He excelled in blending traditional Japanese techniques with innovative styles, making his works unique in form and expression.

Zeshin is renowned for his expertise in urushi-e (lacquer painting) and the Rimpa style, creating designs that depicted nature, animals, and traditional themes with elegant simplicity. He was one of the few artists capable of producing high-quality works in both painting and lacquer art.
