Mari ten Kate specialized in painting lively scenes, often with children playing and animals, as the other painting by Ten Kate offered up. As a true romantic, he idealized their natural simplicity and virtue, shared by the simple existence of farmers and fishermen. His sweet scenes were often a far cry from 19th-century reality, when these populations typically lived a hard and beggarly existence. Mari ten Kate was a student of his brother, the genre painter H.F.C. ten Kate.
