The Utrechtse Vecht and surroundings inspired F.J. van Rossum du Chattel to painting countless impressions of this river. That is why critics call him 'the painter of the Vecht'. He also painted the landscape around The Hague. The artist was born in Leiden in 1856 and received his first painting lessons from his father, Jan Hendrik van Rossum du Chattel. He then attended the 'Teekenschool' in The Hague and worked in the studio of Willem Maris. Although Van Rossum du Chattel was clearly shaped by the Hague School, he developed his own distinctive style.
