Corneille (1922-2010) was a painter and graphic artist who radicalized the conservative Dutch art world in the early 1950s. Along with five other influential artists, including Karel Appel and Constant, he founded the postwar European expressionist movement CoBrA in 1948. Corneille took courses in drawing and etching at the Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam between 1940 and 1942, but is generally considered a self-taught painter. Initially strongly influenced by the work of Picasso, Corneille produced abstract work. Beginning in the late 1960s, Corneille's work takes on a more figurative character. In this work, birds, women and flowers are often the subject.
