"The work must be constructed entirely of purely visual elements. A visual element has no meaning other than itself and so the painting has no meaning other than itself" (van Doesburg) Jan Hendriks works with simple forms and materials in simple rhythmic compositions. Everything superfluous is allowed to go. Simple also means: absence of color.... He works in minimal imagery: a repetition of the same element, sometimes with small shifts or twists. There are no main or secondary elements, no accents. The handwriting that emerges gradually during the process is simply there and allowed to be there. The result is a strong image of emptiness and stillness, of peace, in a meditative atmosphere. Jan Hendriks was born in Tilburg in 1946. He lives and works in Landsmeer (NH).
