Description

Benjamin Blommers (1845-1914)
Signature: Bottom right
Work size: 26 x 30
Technique: Oil on canvas, marouflé on painter's cardboard

Provenance: from a Dutch private collection

As a child, painter Bernardus Johannes Blommers was destined to become a lithographer in his father's printing business. This changed when in 1863 he started taking classes at the The Hague Drawing Academy, where he met Willem Maris. Through him, Blommers came into contact with other artists. On the beach at Scheveningen, Blommers happened to get talking to his great role model Jozef Israëls, an encounter that would lead to a lifelong friendship. Because Israëls was over 20 years older, and had already established a reputation as a founder of The Hague School, he also became an important adviser to Blommers. During his illustrious career, he was hugely lauded, both at home and abroad. For instance, he became hugely popular in the US among leading industrial magnates and was even allowed to visit Theodore Roosevelt.

Viewing is of course possible. We also have our own in-house frame shop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary year. We also make use of restorers from the Dutch Restorers' Association. If you would like to make use of them, please let us know.
