The Impressionist Louis Stutterheim loved painting in the open air and is considered part of the late flowering of the Hague School. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and the Hague Drawing Academy. After completing his studies, he moved in 1904 to the village of Kortenhoef, an area rich in peatlands and lakes. Many painters gathered there, captivated by the lakes, peat islands, windmills, and especially the skies. Later, he traveled to Java and Philadelphia and worked in Utrecht and Amsterdam. From 1924, he painted in the surroundings of ’s-Graveland and Wijdemeren, where he also lived for some time. Over the years, his palette became increasingly lighter and sunnier. Stutterheim was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam.
