Jan Simon Knikker Sr. was one of the painters who continued the loose brushstroke technique of the Hague School and their preference for the atmospheric depiction of nature in the 20th century. Like his son, Jan Knikker Jr., he is considered part of the 'late bloom' of the Hague School. Knikker Sr. mainly painted water scenes, landscapes, and cityscapes. He lived in Hillegom and Leiden and, from 1914, in The Hague. His work was highly sought after internationally.
