Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof began his artistic career as an innovative decorative artist, particularly in the field of flat ornamentation, which he applied to furniture and wall decorations. He was one of the driving forces behind the Nieuwe Kunst movement, a Dutch design revival inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement at the end of the 19th century. As an all-round artist, he created not only furniture but also designs for textiles, book bindings, glass, embroidery patterns, and paintings. It was his paintings, however, that made him most well-known to the public. A significant theme in his paintings were fish, turtles, and lobsters, which he studied extensively at the Aquarium of the Amsterdam zoo, Artis.
