Broer Dobbelsteen, born as Johannes Anthonius (Johan) van den Dobbelsteen in Mierlo in 1936, was a Dutch artist who passed away in 2019. He studied at the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven and initially started his career as a designer. From 1964 onwards, he dedicated himself entirely to art.
His work is characterized by the use of primary colors, large surfaces, and raw forms, with a playful approach to the subject. Dobbelsteen is associated with expressionism and was inspired by the CoBrA movement. He was a student of notable artists such as Kees Bol, Jan Gregoor, and René Smeets.
His paintings are held in institutions, art dealers, galleries, and private collections. Dobbelsteen did not exhibit frequently; his works often quickly found their way to art enthusiasts.
