The most striking feature of the painting is the large trees that dominate most of the composition. The trees have a tangle of branches, some of which are bright orange and red, creating a strong contrast with the green leaves and the gray sky. The painting employs a wide range of colors. The leaves of the trees vary from dark green to light green and yellow, while the trunks and branches range from brown and orange to red. The sky in the background appears gray and stormy, adding a dramatic effect.
In the lower right corner of the painting, the name "FILARSKI" is visible. The painting has a somewhat wild and rugged appearance, which may indicate the influence of Expressionism, a movement in which Filarski was active.
Dirk Filarski, along with Arnout Colnot, is considered one of the pioneers of the Bergense School. He primarily painted landscapes in and around Bergen and Giethoorn, as well as during his extensive travels across Europe and North Africa. Filarski initially used bright colors, creating his earliest luminist works in Bergen until 1910. After this period, his palette shifted to browns and greens, and his style became more powerful and expressive. He also painted still lifes and flowers, often on a large scale, using gray tones and sharply contrasting colors.
Filarski was restless by nature. He found it difficult to settle in one place and constantly traveled to Germany, France, Italy, and Switzerland, always returning to Bergen as his base. He is said to have remarked, "The Netherlands is too simple in color. I need more variety before my eyes."
