Description
Isaac Israels, along with George Hendrik Breitner, was the most important representative of the group of Amsterdam Impressionists. He painted chunks of “accidental life,” which he found in the shopping streets, coffee houses and café-chantants where busy, urban life took place. In a few racy charcoal lines or loose quick brushstrokes with subtle color accents, the artist captured what he saw. He also painted beach scenes in Scheveningen and along the Italian Riviera and was a handsome portraitist. In 1903 Israels settled in Paris for several years.
