Charles Leickert (1816-1907) was briefly a student of W.J.J. Nuijen and from 1839 onwards of Andries Schelfhout. It was especially the latter who had a significant influence on his work. He painted beautiful Dutch ice scenes, summer landscapes, and river views, incorporating various motifs from his sketchbooks. After 1859, he also painted beach scenes and cityscapes. The appeal of his paintings is partly determined by the beautiful play of light and the richly detailed narrative elements.
