Pieter Defesche (1921–1998) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist, best known for his expressive, colorful landscapes and cityscapes. Born in Maastricht, he was one of the key figures in post-war Dutch painting, often associated with Limburg Expressionism.
Defesche studied at the City Academy for Applied Arts and later at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, where he further developed his artistic skills. His work is characterized by bold brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and a dreamy, sometimes almost surreal atmosphere. He drew inspiration from the landscape of South Limburg but gave it a personal, nearly abstract interpretation.
In addition to paintings, Defesche also created graphic works and decorative art. His oeuvre is often compared to that of contemporaries like Karel Appel and Corneille, although he remained more closely connected to the lyrical and landscape tradition. His works are included in various museum and private collections and continue to be appreciated for their unique expression and vibrancy.
