Born on March 31, 1949, in Amsterdam, where he also passed away on December 17, 2023, Peter van Hugten was a versatile Dutch artist whose career spanned over five decades. From the age of twelve, during an extended hospital stay, Van Hugten began drawing seriously. His professional career took off when he worked as a political cartoonist and illustrator for NRC Handelsblad from 1974 to 1976. In 1978, he commenced his long-standing collaboration with de Volkskrant, which would last more than 40 years.

Van Hugten's contributions to Dutch literature and journalism are undeniable with over 300 illustrated books and book covers to his name. His illustrations for the Collected Works of Willem Elsschot and Charles de Coster's Till Eulenspiegel are particularly noteworthy and were recognized as some of the Best Designed Books. In addition to his illustrious drawing work, Van Hugten was also a respected teacher at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.

His influence and techniques continue to be a source of inspiration for artists and illustrators. Van Hugten's exhibitions always attracted numerous visitors, and his works remain a staple in the collections of art aficionados.
