Description

Michele Cammarano (1835-1920) was an Italian painter known for his historical and realistic paintings. Born in Naples, he played an important role in the Italian art scene of the 19th century. Cammarano studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples and was influenced by the realist movement that was emerging at the time.

Cammarano's work often focused on historical events, especially scenes of Italian unification (Risorgimento). His paintings often showed heroic moments and battles, capturing the emotion and drama of the events. One of his best-known works is ‘La Battaglia di San Martino’ (The Battle of San Martino), in which he depicts the battle between Italian troops and the Austrian army in 1859.

Besides historical paintings, Cammarano also produced realistic works depicting everyday life in Italy, with a focus on social themes. His style combined realism with a dramatic sense of composition and use of colour.

During his lifetime, Michele Cammarano was recognised as one of the most important painters of his time and received several prestigious commissions. His works can be found in important Italian museums and collections, and he is still appreciated for his contributions to Italian art history.
