Description

The artwork offers an intimate portrait of the famous painter Jozef Israëls (1824-1911), a leading figure in the Hague School. The portrait captures Jozef Israëls' character and dedication as an artist; he is depicted in deep concentration while painting, with a palette in one hand and a brush in the other. His attention is fully focused on the canvas in front of him, capturing a moment of creation and artistic inspiration.

Jan Pieter Veth came from a well-to-do, art-minded background and was educated at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. There, he became friends with, among others, Willem Witsen and Maurits van der Valk, with whom, when De Nieuwe Gids was founded, he edited the visual arts section of the magazine of the same name. He mainly made a name for himself with his portraits, although he also painted landscapes. He was also a good etcher and lithographer. For the weekly De Amsterdammer between 1888 and 1896, he made numerous portrait lithographs of leading figures in politics, science and culture, as well as for De Kroniek. This established his fame as a portraitist, especially in Amsterdam and the surrounding area. All major Dutch museums have portraits by the artist in their collections.
