Description

Herman Bogman (1890-1975), shepherd with sheep near cage, oil on canvas, 78 x 3 x 60 cm, the cityscapes and still lifes of Herman Bogman stand out for their fineness of colorite and the pure light. In this the painter was influenced by Willem de Zwart, from whom he received advice as a young and gifted artist. Just like De Zwart, Bogman was a Ras-Hagenaar, for whom the streets, squares and parks of the Hofstad were an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Until he was the age of fifty, he mainly worked in oil paint, then he started to watercolor. In a short time, he developed into one of the most prominent watercolors of his time, able to achieve the same capacity and depth with watercolor as with oil paint.
