Baisen Hirai (1889–1969) was a prominent Japanese lacquer artist known for modernizing traditional lacquer techniques during the Meiji, Taishō, and early Shōwa periods. A master of makie (lacquer decoration using powdered gold or silver), he was celebrated for his intricate designs, often inspired by nature, and his ability to blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with more contemporary artistic elements.
Hirai was trained under notable lacquer masters and developed his own style that incorporated high-relief maki-e and experimental techniques. His work reflected a balance between preserving Japan’s lacquer traditions and embracing new influences from the West.
Recognized internationally, Hirai’s work was displayed in museums and collections worldwide. His legacy is marked by his contributions to the development of modern lacquer art, which continues to influence future generations of artists in Japan and beyond.
