Specifications

Sientje Mesdag-van Houten was married to the marine painter H.W. Mesdag. In 1870 - at the age of 35 - she began painting. Initially Veluwe landscapes, dune views and then still lifes. Especially in this last genre her talent revealed itself. Her still lifes are set up with speed in a Dutch impressionist manner, in which atmosphere and composition win out over accurate elaboration of details.
