Coba Surie belongs to the 'Amsterdam Joffers', a group of painters that also includes Lizzy Ansingh and Coba Ritsema. Within this group she fairly went her own way. She preferred to paint impressionist figures and still lifes of fish or everyday objects in rich colors. In the summer the painter usually went to Brabant or Zeeland with her roommate Ans van den Berg, where she converted her impressions into quick drawings and watercolors.
